01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Run by an owner-baker who honed their craft in Finland, Kiitos fills its counter with the rustic, hearty loaves that anchor daily Nordic tables. Flagship offerings such as ruislimppu and traditional hapanleipä are made with 85 percent rye flour and baked entirely without egg or butter, resulting in dense, deeply nourishing meal breads. Sliced thin, each bite yields the distinct savor of rye backed by a mellow acidity, making them a natural base for open-faced sandwiches with smoked salmon, cheese, or ham. Kiitos also offers Whole Wheat 100, made with 100 percent whole wheat flour, providing an easy everyday loaf that takes nicely to honey or a morning turn in the toaster.

Beyond plain table breads, the sweet and spiced loaves are well worth a look. The cinnamon rolls carry a gentle fragrance of cardamom; warmed up, the exterior turns crisp while the crumb reveals its layered richness. Specialty loaves like Yousei no Makura, studded generously with figs and walnuts, and Hokuou no Morikara, packed with raisins and walnuts, blend homemade natural yeast dough with the sweetness of dried fruit for an approachable loaf with understated tartness. You will also spot Finnish standards like karjalanpiirakka, the traditional rye-crust rice porridge pie, kept true to its rustic roots.

The shop operates exclusively for takeout with no dine-in seats, and transactions are cash only. Many of the larger loaves are sold in half or quarter portions, making it easy to sample a few different styles. Because the owner manages everything solo, from the ovens to the front counter, the lineup shifts from day to day, and reserving loaves ahead of time is wise if you have your heart set on a particular bake.
